When the 'queen' of the most famous valley in the Alps coats the floor in snowflakes, crowds flock there for winter and extreme sports. Nestling in the shadows of the 4810 metre high giant, the world's ski capital offers an impressive range of activities!

A tour around Chamonix

A patchwork of chalets, luxury villas, Belle Époque hotels, Art Deco façades, traditional farms and modern architecture, there are many sides to the mountain town of Chamonix.

Push open the doors of Saint-Michel church, learn about the celebrated history of Mont Blanc at the Musée Alpin and stop off for a refreshment at the Art Nouveau-style Café la Terrasse (43, place Balmat). If you're looking for something unusual to buy, how about a traditional bell from Devouassoud (Chemin à Batioret).

Take to the heights...

Chamonix is well known for its highland hiking paths. A great summer classic, the 'Tour du Mont Blanc' covers a 250 km circuit through France, Italy and Switzerland.

A path leads to the impressive Bossons glacier, Europe's largest icefield. Immerse yourself in the fabulous surroundings of the Aiguilles-Rouges, Bérard Valley and Carlaveyron nature reserves.

Look out for the chamois, marmots and ibex among the lakes, cliffs, glaciers and flowered prairies. If you're not an expert mountaineer, why not try one of the many other activities on offer: rock climbing, via ferratas, canyoning, hydrospeed, mountain biking, adventure trails, golf, fishing hikes and more…

...reach new heights!

High mountains may be the preserve of mountaineers, but with ski lifts you can still aim for the Roof of Europe and enjoy some spectacular views. The Téléphérique de Aiguille du Midi will propel you to a height of 3842 metres in just a few minutes. From the terraces you have a breathtaking view of Mont Blanc and other alpine summits!

Take a cable car from here over blue-tinged crevasses and seracs. Or board the Montenvers cog train to the extraordinary Mer de Glace glacier. An ice cave leads you to the very heart of the glacier and walkers can enjoy the nature trails.

Tip: The Téléphérique du Brévent offers an exceptional view over the Mont Blanc mountain range, the Aiguille du Midi and the Chamonix peaks.
